Palembang Malay Language
Palembang language
Palembang, also known as Palembang Malay (Baso Melayu Palembang), or Musi, is a Malayic language primarily spoken in about two thirds of South Sumatra Province in Indonesia, especially along the Musi River. It consists of two separate but mutually intelligible dialect chains: Musi and Palembang. The Palembang dialect is a koine that was born in Palembang, the capital city of South Sumatra. It has become a lingua franca throughout major population centers in the province, and is often used polyglossically with Indonesian and other regional languages and dialects in the area. Since parts of South Sumatra used to be under direct Javanese rule for quite a long time, the speech varieties of Palembang and its surrounding area are significantly influenced by Javanese, down to their core vocabularies.
Level
The Palembang language has two levels, namely Baso Pelembang Alus or Bebaso (Polite) and Baso Pelembang Sari-sari (Colloquially). Baso Pelembang Alus is used in conversations with community leaders, elders, or respected people, especially in traditional ceremonies. This language has similarities with Javanese because of the relationship between the Sriwijaya Kingdom and the Palembang Darussalam Sultanate with the kingdoms on the island of Java. That is why the vocabulary of Baso Pelembang Alus has many similarities with the vocabulary of the Javanese language.
Meanwhile, the everyday language is used by the Palembang people and is one of the dialects of the Malay language. In their daily practice, Palembang people usually mix this language and Indonesian (word choice based on conditions and coherence) so that the use of the Palembang language becomes an art in itself.
Palembang language has similarities with regional languages in surrounding provinces, such as Jambi, Bengkulu and even provinces in Java (with different intonations). In Palembang, Jambi and Bengkulu, the suffix 'a' in Indonesian vocabulary is usually changed to 'o'.
